HEED Bangladesh (Health, Education and Economic Development) is a
Christian, Non-Governmental and Non-profit, national Organization, formed in
1974, by several Western Partner Organizations, to support people displaced by ‘Liberation
war of Bangladesh’ in 1971.
In 1978, ‘HEED
Handicrafts’ was formed as an arm of HEED Bangladesh program to create jobs and
support the war victims by giving economic stability. It is a Fair trade
handicrafts work with about 11,000 craftsmen, across 304 different groups. They
create opportunities for a wide spectrum of people including marginalized craftsmen
and leprosy cured patients.
55 years old Sree Nakul Chandra Das (in
the picture) was one of the victims of the war, who moved to the city. He
worked for a cane furniture factory. The working conditions were bad and the
pay was very less. He and his family struggled for several years before they
found about HEED Handicrafts.
